A documentary about the history of Chile saltpetre. From the beginning of the 20th century, ships came in to the port of Delfzijl with Chile nitrate, a fertilizer from Chile. That caused prosperity among northern farmers, but rebellion and exploitation under Chilean miners.
This fertilizer was mined in the Atacama desert, the Pampas in northern Chile. From various ports, particularly from the Chilean port of Iquique, the saltpetre was shipped to Europe / North Netherlands.
The countryside of Groningen flourishes around with the arrival of Chile saltpetre. Nitric turns the heavy clay into a fertile soil for beets, corn and potatoes. The "white gold" means rich harvest, prosperity and happiness for the Groninger farmers.
The story of a commodity that not only means prosperity and happiness, but also brought poverty, struggle, songs and poetry.
