Week-end, a great way to start the weekend. This week in Week End:

    Dolmens, Hein Klompmaker

In the province of Drenthe there are still 52 dolmens, and just across the border in the province of Groningen is one. Dolmens are the oldest monuments in the Netherlands. These monuments are about 5000 years ago in the New Stone Age, the last period of the Stone Age. Dolmens were made of huge boulders that the ice, in the ice age of about 100,000 years ago moved to the north of the Netherlands. These boulders are found only where the ice sheet has been: the north of the Netherlands. The huge boulders are called megaliths (derived from the Greek words mega = large and lithos = stone). Dolmens were used as burial chambers. The bones of the deceased people have perished in the course of 5000 years. Part of the grave gifts is well preserved: jars of pottery, stone tools and weapons, and jewelry, for example amber.

But can you just dig a dolmen? The ancient burial chambers today have also suffered from vandalism.
