    Episode 41: Ypke

First aired: Wednesday, 11 November 2015 at 18.00 hours

On the 24th and 25th of November 2015, (former) city council members from the Netherlands gather for the fourth edition of the city council member conference in Utrecht. In 2007, Lotte Veltman and Jasper Huizinga made documentary about Ypke Gietema, a well-known alderman in Groningen who deceased in 2013.

Gietema was a distinct man. By a stroke of luck (an ineligible place, two party members that declined), he became councillor in 1974.

In 1978 Gietema succeeded his party colleague Max van den Berg as alderman of Spatial Planning. Gietema led several controversial projects in the city, including the construction of the Groninger Museum and the Public Library.

In 2008 the film won the “Dutch Golden Stone” prize, which was awarded at the Scenecs Film Festival in Amersfoort.
