Episode 22: Foundation Alde Fryske KerkenFirst aired: Wednesday, 17 February 2016 at 17.32 hours
Theatres aren't the only buildings to host cultural activities, churches prove to be suitable as well. That's what Arno van der Heyden finds out in this episode of Toneelmeesters.
Since 1970, foundation Alde Frsyke Tsjerken (old Frysian churches) is committed to recovering and preserving old churches in Friesland. When the congregation doesn't have the financial and managerial facilities, the foundation takes over its monumental buildings. In addition, they try to stimulate public interest for these churches. The latter is being done by frequently organising cultural events. The classical buildings serve as atmospheric backgrounds for concerts and lectures. Arno visits the foundation and is being welcomed by impresario Reina Hilarides at the village church of Leeuwarden Huizum. He also chats with stagemaster Peter Popken; his tip leads Arno to de Groate Kerk (the big church) in Sint Jacobiparochie.
