Episode 45: An unfinished assigmentFirst aired: Wednesday, 4 May 2016 at 18.00 hours
In memory of the murdered Jewish Groningers, an assigment was to create a monument. In Noorderdiepte the story of sculptor Edu Waskowsky is being told.
In 1969, sculptor Edu Waskowsky was commissioned by the Jewish Monument Committee to create a monument in memory of the 3,000 Jewish Groningers who died in World War II. The monument had to include a menorah (candlestick). He made seven big hands on pedestals for an irregularly built wall. The intention was to unveil the statue at the commemoration in 1970. When Waskowsky had two hands done, it became clear that he couldn't make the deadline. Time and money ran out.
In Noorderdiepte a documentary about the history of the Jewish monument at the Hereweg in Groningen, designed by Edu Waskowsky, who could not complete the work due to his early death. The documentary sketches the tension between artist and client.
