Weekly Podium.TV will bring the people of our beautiful villages in picture in the north of the Netherlands. To meet special people, to see the village and told wonderful stories. There are hundreds of villages in the northern provinces and all of them are worth to get the attention.

The village was established around the monastery which was founded here in 1192. This monastery of Aduard grew into the largest and most influential of the surrounding district. At its height it had more than 10,000 hectares of land, part of which in Friesland and Drenthe. The main reason for the enormous growth of the monastery was that it took seriously to hand the reclamation and drainage of the wasteland.

Hooghalen is an esdorp on the flank of the sandy soils. It sits above a Salt dome. The main attraction of Hooghalen is the Memorial Center Camp Westerbork. Here the story is told from Camp Westerbork and the Holocaust in general. The transit camp Westerbork lays on the edge of the former neighbor Westerbork and is named after the town and not to Hooghalen. The village of Westerbork is much further south.

The name of the village is a Dutch form of the Frisian word tynje fish dam which originally was called into a watercourse. The name is probably due to a construction in which toes were processed.

Veenhuizen originally formed a peat mining village that is already mentioned in 1381 as Veenhuysen. In 1823 the appearance of the village changed completely when three large asylums for beggars, vagrants and orphans were built.

Oldeberkoop is an ancient village that was first mentioned in 1228, as Frisian fighters come together in "Brokope" to travel in Drenthe. This historic village is build on the sand ridges between the rivers Linde and Tjonger 900 years ago. Oldeberkoop; the name is probably derived from two different words. Namely "broek" that "stuk grasland" means, and "ope", derived from water.

Zuidwolde has a long history. Before the beginning of the era there already lived some people in this area. In 1275 the name Suthwalda is first mentioned in writing. No major battles have taken place and the number Zuidwoldigers stayed small.

Borger is a town and former municipality in the province of Drenthe. Borger lies on the hill “de Hondsrug” and is known by the largest megaliths of the Netherlands, the D27. In the immediate vicinity of Borger there are two other dolmens.

Through the center of Gorredijk runs the Opsterlandse Compagnonsvaart; a canal. Gorredijk is called a "Vlecke" and has occurred by the peat extraction. Gorredijk is the place where goods were imported, stored and traded. A nickname for them is also "handjeklappers”.

Aalden is a village in the province of Drenthe, located in the municipality of Coevorden. Allden is together with the neighboring village Zweeloo almost entirely, only separated by the Aelderstroom or Westerstroom. The village itself consists of two parts, separated by the Aelderstraat and the thoroughfare.
