Delfzijl originated in the thirteenth century when a lock was built in the Delf. Because of its location on the water Delfzijl is vulnerable to flooding.

Delfzijl ( Groningen : Delfziel ) is a port city and a municipality in the northeast of the province of Groningen.
Delfzijl is the fifth largest port in the Netherlands. Chemical Park Delfzijl is similar in size to the second chemical industrial area in the Netherlands. Seventeen percent of the total rural employment in the chemical industry is located in Delfzijl.
On the dike near the sea near Eemshotel stands the monument to the regional singer and poet Ede Staal , who lived part of his life in Delfzijl and buried there . Ede Staal sang in his songs often about this part of the province of Groningen. One of his songs is about the port of Delfzijl .
