The village was established around the monastery which was founded here in 1192. This monastery of Aduard grew into the largest and most influential of the surrounding district. At its height it had more than 10,000 hectares of land, part of which in Friesland and Drenthe. The main reason for the enormous growth of the monastery was that it took seriously to hand the reclamation and drainage of the wasteland.
