Episode 31: De vier Pelikanen LeeuwardenFirst aired: Wednesday, 20 April 2016 at 17.32 hours
In Leeuwarden four pelicans look out over their surroundings, on the roof of a national monument. Toneelmeesters visits the smalles art-nouveau theatre of Europe.
De vier Pelikanen is 'magical monumental' on the inside and outside. The theatre's name is derived from the statue made by Joseph Mendes da Costa, which stands on the roof. The pelican symbolises insurance, because she even feeds her offspring her own blood, if needed. This symbol gives away the original function of the building: an insurance office. Since 2013 it's being used for small scale theatre performances, organised by De vier Pelikanen foundation. However, the property is for sale now, will this be the end of this unique theatre? Arno van der Heyden talks about it and gets a tour by director and chairperson of the foundation, Jan-Dirk Ravesteijn.
